Blackle Firefox Search Add-On

What is Blackle?

Blackle is an eco-friendly search engine, powered by Google! However, instead of google's white screen, Blackle shows a black screen. If everyone with a CRT display used blackle instead of google, it would save tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions every year. Even people with LCD displays can keep themselves reminded of the importance of the environment. Check it out at http://www.blackle.com/.

Blackle was among the first of many "dark" googles. See, for example, the comments on my blog entry about Blackle.

This page allows you to put a Dark Google search into your Firefox 2 (and maybe IE7) search bar, via a Dark Google "Firefox search extension". Install the extension now, and save the planet while you surf! If you don't have the latest version of firefox, you can get it from here

To install:

  • Locate the search box at the top right of your browser window.
  • Click on the icon, to see the drop down menu.
  • Select Add "Dark Google search".
  • Click on the icon again, to see the menu again.
  • Select Generic Dark Google
Then, use that search box whenever you want to surf the web, and you'll be saving power - and greenhouse gas emissions - with every search you make!

News! If you either

  • Don't like the grey on black of Blackle or this Dark Google, or
  • Have an LCD, so believe that it wouldn't save any power,
You should check out my range of Colorful Google Searches and their Firefox Search Extensions. There are dark ones for people who want to save power, but which look better than the one on this page. There are also lighter ones too, for people who just want a nicer looking google search, or who want to be able to pick and choose the colors to match their mood.
